The Arizona Western Matadors are gearing up for another exciting season on the basketball court, and the team's determination is palpable. After a remarkable 23-8 campaign that fell just short of the championship, Head Coach Kyle Isaacs is back for his 17th season at the helm, ready to lead the Matadors to new heights.
This year's motto, 'Dominate the Details,' reflects a shift in focus. Coach Isaacs explains, 'Last year, we embraced the process, and it worked wonders. Now, we're all about precision. When you have a team of six players who understand the desired approach, it's a game-changer.'
The Matadors' strategy revolves around maintaining their signature traits: toughness, defense, and physicality. However, they also aim to address a critical weakness from the previous season - their outside shooting. Coach Isaacs notes, 'We've been working on our outside shooting, and I believe we're in a better position to make those crucial shots this year.'
The team's confidence is evident in the words of Sophomore Guard Engel Gutierrez, who credits his improved performance to a productive offseason. 'I feel much better,' he says. 'Playing in the summer league back home boosted my confidence. We're pushing ourselves daily to become one percent better.'
Redshirt Sophomore Forward Paora Winitana, from Alpine, Utah, shares a similar sentiment. After a season of adjustment, he's eager to make a difference. 'I'm thrilled to get back on the court,' Winitana expresses. 'Taking a break helped me readjust, and I'm ready to dive back in.'
With a talented returning core, an experienced coaching staff, and a renewed emphasis on precision, the Matadors are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season. They aim to dominate the details and make a deep playoff run, leaving their mark on the basketball world.
