What are the three forms of chastity? ›

There are three forms of the virtue of chastity: the first is that of spouses, the second that of widows, and the third that of virgins. We do not praise any one of them to the exclusion of the others.... This is what makes for the richness of the discipline of the Church.

His body nourishes us and sanctifies our body. Chastity expresses respect for persons and their capacity for self-giving. It assures us that we are being loved for ourselves and that we are loving oth- ers for themselves and not only for the pleasure they can give us.

Chastity, also known as purity, is a virtue related to temperance. Someone who is chaste refrains either from sexual activity that is considered immoral or from any sexual activity, according to their state of life.

Chastity, in many religious and cultural contexts, is a virtue concerning the state of purity of the mind and body. The term is most often associated with refraining from sexual intimacy, especially outside of marriage.

It includes strict abstinence from sexual relations before marriage and complete fidelity and loyalty to one's spouse after marriage. The law of chastity requires that sexual relations be reserved for marriage between a man and a woman.

The Lord and His prophets condemn sexual immorality. All sexual relations outside of marriage violate the law of chastity and are physically and spiritually dangerous for those who engage in them.

Activities considered a violation of the law of chastity include both adultery and fornication as well as broader behavior.

Celibacy is sexual abstinence generally motivated by factors such as an individual's personal or religious beliefs. Sexual abstinence before marriage is required in some societies by social norms, or by law in some countries. It is a part of chastity.

These include decreased chance of psychological damage from expressing intimacy without commitment, freedom from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), freedom from unwanted pregnancies, and an increase in marital stability and satisfaction.

Chastity (as understood by the Church) is a matter of striving to conform, without resentment, one's heart and mind to the authorship of God in terms of sexuality. Meanwhile, abstinence is about our behaviors (or, more accurately, lack thereof), and celibacy is a state in life (as in, the unmarried/celibate state).

Is a chaste person a virgin? ›

Some people think that chastity and virginity are synonymous, but they are not. Not all chaste people are virgins, and not all virgins are chaste.

To practice the virtue of chastity is a choice you are free to make every day of your life. It's a choice for true love because God wants what's best for you. And that true love is expressed the most beautifully in self-sacrifice. Chastity is a beautiful invitation from God to a life of freedom.

Chastity is practiced by a person who makes a habit of presenting their body again and again and again, “as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” (Romans 12:1), and as an act of worship to the God who made their body, loves their body, and cares deeply about their body.

At a spiritual level, it means a lot more. Chastity is the resolve to keep a heart pure and on fire for Jesus. It is not just the virtue that protects us from sexual sin. Chastity is the watchman that guards the heart from any passion that would douse or misdirect the love that belongs to the bridegroom himself.

VIRGINITY AND CHASTITY IN LATE ANTIQUITY

Women in Late Antiquity were divided into three classes: virgins, widows, and wives. Virginity was regarded as the highest state, widowhood was second, wifehood, last.

It is good to see that Williams rightly distinguishes between celibacy and chastity – unlike most commentators on the subject who conflate the two: Celibacy refers to the unmarried state; chastity is the virtue by which one lives out fidelity to the sixth and ninth commandments – according to one's state in life.

The epic Bhagavadgita (or Gita) describes jnana-marga, the way of knowledge (study of philosophical texts and contemplation); karma-marga, the way of action (proper performance of one's religious and ethical duties); and bhakti-marga, the way of devotion and self-surrender to God.

Either way, abstinence is defined as what a person is not doing—in other words, no sex. Chastity is different because it is defined by what a person is doing with his or her sexuality. It means having the strength to use your sexuality according to God's plan, whether you are single or married.
