From 1904, when his career began, until 1962, when he died, Eugène Freyssinet did not stop building or advising on all aspects related with his work. To give an idea of his interest in the field of bridges, we selected the following: the Veurdre and Plougastel bridges as reinforced concrete examples and the Luzancy, the Marne and the Caracas La Guaira highway bridges as prestressed concrete works. In these brief descriptions, rather than the technical nature of the design, we have focused on intuition and innovation which made these works models and which inspired many engineers to continue working respecting quality.

This article examines the work of Eugène Freyssinet, who is best known for inventing prestressed concrete. His contributions to engineering, however, extend much further than that. He was a craftsman and bridge builder, whose arch bridges broke the world record for span length. He designed and built the Prairéal-sur-Besbre Bridge, which featured the first application of precompression in a concrete arch for the purpose of removing its formwork. Freyssinet observed the time-dependent behavior of concrete under load, now known as creep, a phenomenon which administrative authorities at the time denied the existence of. His observation of creep eventually lead Freyssinet to the development of prestressing.

Abstract It is well known that Eugène Freyssinet was the inventor of prestressed concrete. However, it is not as well known that he was a skilled craftsman and a prolific bridge builder, qualities that prepared him to invent prestressed concrete. After graduating in 1905, Freyssinet built a number of concrete arch bridges, each of which successively broke his own world record for span length. This enabled him to develop an appreciation for creep of concrete, and encouraged him to develop high quality concrete and high strength steel that were necessary for the invention of prestressed concrete in 1928. His spectacular rescue of the Le Havre Maritime Station in 1934 was the first practical application of his prestressing devices and instantly earned him a worldwide reputation. One of the more profound contributions of Freyssinet is the invention of precast segmental construction, which started with his structures of the Luzancy Bridge lineage in the 1940s, and to this day allows concrete bridges to remain competitive with steel bridges. This paper commemorates the 50th anniversary of his passing in 1962 by describing the journey taken to create an “entirely new material” that led to a “revolution in the art of building”.
