A jaw-dropping new addition to the Bridlington seafront has sparked a buzz of excitement and curiosity! But here's where it gets controversial...
In a move that has divided opinions, a giant lobster sculpture now stands proudly in Pembroke Gardens, opposite the iconic Bridlington Spa. This artistic masterpiece, crafted by local talent Emma Stothard, measures an impressive three meters in length and is made entirely of woven steel.
The sculpture, named the Bridlington Lobster, is a tribute to the town's remarkable status as one of Europe's leading lobster exporters. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the art, it's a celebration of the local community and its rich maritime heritage.
Lesley Jackson, the generous donor behind this project, expressed her delight at unveiling the sculpture on Saturday morning. She shared, "I first laid eyes on this masterpiece in Emma's studio in Whitby, and I knew instantly that it belonged in the lobster capital of Europe. And here it is!"
Emma Stothard, the artist, is a native of Hull and grew up in Kilnsea. Her unique style involves creating sculptures from willow and wire, adding a touch of natural beauty to her work.
Ms. Jackson's business, Hudson Contract, sponsored the lobster's journey to Bridlington, but she wasn't alone in her support. The Bridlington Ambassadors, Bridlington in Bloom, Brightening Up Bridlington, and local councils all played a part in bringing this vision to life.
The Bridlington Ambassadors dedicated the sculpture to the harbour community, further emphasizing its connection to the town's identity and history.
