I drink coffee. A lot of it. I was happily chugging heavy cream with my coffee for a good long while, giving nary a thought to just how much heavy cream I was chugging.

Yeah. That probably wasn’t my best plan. I kind of have a “thing” for heavy cream.

A refresher visit to A New Atkins for a New You reminded me, we’re only looking at about an ounce and a half of heavy creamer a day, at least on induction. For me, that was just a few cups of coffee away! I have tried both unsweetened almond milk and unsweetened coconut milk in my coffee, but neither really flipped my switch as a low carb coffee creamer.

However, mixing the coconut milk with heavy cream–sort of like “coconut milk helper”–tastes good, still makes a rich cup of coffee, lends itself well to flavoring with extracts, and helps the heavy-cream-loving crowd slow down a little.

Not that I would know anything about that…Ahem.

Low Carb Coffee Creamer Recipe » Low Carb Zen (1)

Lower carb than 1/2 & 1/2 (half milk and half cream for my international folks), lower calorie than all heavy whipping cream, and delicious!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened Coconut Milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tea vanilla extract (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  • Mix the ingredients and leave in the fridge, ready to add when you pour your next "cuppa Joe." You can add extract or sweetener to your low carb coffee creamer for whatever flavorings you want.

Recipe Notes

Serving size is 1/8th of the total, roughly.

Coconut milk thickens up sometimes, especially if you shake it up. If you're not used to this, it might appear your creamer is curdled. It's not. Just don't think about it too hard and you'll be okay.

I love to add vanilla extract, and sometimes a smidgen sugar-free chocolate syrup when I'm mixing it all together. Heaven!

  • I also looooove heavy cream in my coffee and drank it morning til night up until a few weeks ago when I realized I was drinking literally several CUPS of it every day! Thank you for the alternative!

  • Well…I dont drink cups of coffee but I make a protein shake every morning and put a tbsp of instant coffee crystals in it and 1 tbsp of Coffeemate Sugarfree hazelnut creamer powder. I have been doing that for almost a year but I guess I need to rethink that.

  • I’m not crazy about flavored creamers, but I’m using 1/2 almond milk (unflavored/unsweetened) and 1/2 HWC: cuts calories AND carbs!

    • Exactly! I generally don’t worry much about calories but with as much HWC as I can down, it behooves me to be aware.

  • Hello!
Is the nutritional information and ingredients amount that you mentioned consists of one cup and can i use almond milk instead of coconut? What impact it will have on carbs and calories?
    Thank you

    Reply

    • The size was for about two tablespoons of it – most of the calories is from the heavy cream. You can use almond milk as well, which is very low carb and low calorie if you use unsweetened. You’ll need to figure your nutritionals based on what you actually use.I always suggest people consider the carb counts in the recipes as rough guidelines. If you’re tracking, it’s good to look at the ingredients you’re using as they may be different than the recipe or the author may have just made a mistake.

  • Any ideas for making a carmel sea salt coffee creamer? Just looked at the carb count, OUCH! Love my new flavor, need a low carb alternative! Any ideas?
    Thanks

    • I am not sure about the Sea Salt part, but I’d look for some Sugar free syrup. My local Walmart carries this one and Netrition has some good flavors (if you don’t have issue with liquid Splenda sweetening). Otherwise I’d look for extracts to flavor it. Hope that helps!

  • I am one who likes a little coffee with my creamer too. The lowest carb creamer I discovered had been LC Foods Coconut Cream. I make 5 – 6oz cups in a thermos a day. I use 1/3 cup of the coconut creamer, stevia sweetner, and a little butter-rum food flavoring.

The LC Coconut Cream you can get from Amazon I use 5×13.5 oz cans of cream for my 5 cups of coffee a day (a month.supply)

The cost figures out to a dollar a day and adds 200 calories. Total carbs 1 and dietary fiber < 1 so net carbs are less than 1 carb for 5 cups of coffee or practically nothing – (even on the Atkins induction diet restriction). I am a man who has gone from 230 lbs to 162 lbs. Loosing the 68lbs has taken me a year that's almost 6 lbs a month.

  • I don’t know about everyone else, but I am having a very difficult time reading your post because of the font. Portions of many letters are faded or non-existent on an already light font. I can stare at it and finally make out the text but it is extremely hard on my eyes and I had to stop. I can’t imagine you intended this. I occasionally run into other websites who use this font also. I don’t get it!

    Reply

    • Thanks for the heads up on your experience. The font doesn’t show up super light for me, but knowing it does for some, I can look into making adjustments.

  • I was surprised to see all of the comments on calorie count as far as the heavy whipping cream or cream. I understand that it’s no big deal for calories if you’re doing a low-carb diet

    Reply

    • It’s true many low carbers don’t specifically count calories, but keto is becoming more prevalent, and the keto folks do track calories along with fat, protein, etc. And even for everyday low carbers, especially those nearer to their goal, overdoing the higher calorie foods can cause stalls. I don’t usually advise people to worry over calories, but if they are not losing weight and are not sure why, it’s one of the places I will suggest they look, along with specialty foods, etc.

  • Just as an add on, I believe its sweet leaf or sweet one who has a caramel drops stevia liquid. Im not crazy about caramel, but one of them had it. I use the English toffee occasionally (yeah I know), but also the vanilla and the chocolate. no calories and nice flavor. I like the ideas on the creamers as Im a heavy whipping cream indulger as well. Good Luck.

    • I think something like coffee would be a good use for the flavored drops. And would never give someone a hard time about their choices, ’cause I just don’t. Not my business what someone else puts in their body, you know? Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

  • I am having trouble making sense of your nutritional calories. It says 50 cal per cup which cannot be right since 1 tablespoon of the cream is 50 cal. What am I doing wrong?

    Reply

    • I’m sorry, Pat. It was confusing! The “cup” was referring to a cup of coffee which is very confusing. Duh! And I recently changed my recipe plugin and nutritional calculations, too. So I’ve redone this one and figure about 1/8th the total mix is a “serving.” I hope I managed to make the recipe a little clearer. And thanks for checking – it’s really easy to overlook issues with nutritionals sometimes. I appreciate the heads up!

  • I have started using Califia Farms Toasted Coconut Almond Milk, Walden Farms unsweetened creamer, and flavored liquid stevia. It is great! The almond milk has only 45 calories for 8 oz and 0 net carbs.

  • Is the cup of coffee listed in the ingredients part of the creamer recipe itself, or did you list it as in the cup you’re drinking and adding the creamer to?

    Reply

    • Not part of the creamer recipe, no. Just what you put the creamer in. I should change that to make it more clear.

  • I’m one of those who doesn’t count calories on keto till I’m nearer to my goal, stalling, and frustrated. I’m also a 3 pot of coffee per day drinker and go through a larger carton of HWC every 4th day. So I’ve reached the point about 2 weeks ago where I’m entering all my calories into MFP and had to ditch the calorie laden HWC. I’m measuring 2 tsps of coffee mate dry creamer and/or a tbs of half n half. The pounds are falling off again, but still searching for something low in calories and carbless since my coffee additives can take up a sizable chunk of my 1100 calorie limit I’ve set for myself. While this sounds good, it’s the 79 calories or 1/8th serving size PER CUP? Even at only 10 cups a day that would consume 790 calories of my 1100 limit. Definitely no can do.

    • Nikki – I feel your pain with both the coffee drinking and the love for heavy whipping cream. I’ve gotta love somebody who says, “…even at only 10 cups a day…” Haha! Thanks for questioning these values, because it pushed me to take a closer look. My nutritionals had pulled in the values for sweetened coconut milk instead of unsweetened, so I made the appropriate adjustments. I’m counting a serving as a couple of tablespoons and figuring there are 16 T. in a cup, it comes out to roughly 8 servings since it’s slightly more than a cup total here. Putting in the values for unsweetened drops it down to 27 calories per serving. The heavy cream is still over 200 calories for the whole recipe so it does push it up some. If you track, it’s always a good idea to question or figure the nutritionals yourself because it’s very easy for folks to make a mistake in that regard…I appreciate the help identifying the issue!

  • So I am thinking about making my own peppermint mocha creamer. I was thinking I would just add the extracts to heavy cream and pray it works out. Not to keen on the coconut peppermint chocolate mix…. I figured I could probably use peppermint extract and chocolate flavoring (sugar free of course) and shake and pour. What are your thoughts?

    Reply

    • Well, I’d try it in one cup first to make sure you like it before making a whole bunch of peppermint/chocolate heavy cream. Because if you didn’t dig it you’d be scrambling to figure out how to use that cream. Now, I’m totally not saying you have to make it my way here, but in case anyone wonders the coconut milk doesn’t make this taste coconutty. Basically, I was playing around with the ratios to have a much coconut milk as possible without overly impacting the flavor. It’s not tasty enough I’d drink it straight because I just don’t love coconut milk that much, but it does work for me in coffee. Once you try your version, I’d love to hear what you did and how it worked out. Can’t have too much inspiration! Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.

  • The nutrional chart has the total carbs blocked out. Can u tell me the total amount of carbs in 1 serving?

    Reply

    • Thanks for pointing that out! Not sure how I managed to erase the carbs but I corrected it. As written, you’re looking at the creamer to add about a carb to a cup of coffee if you use a couple of tablespoons based on my calculations.
