There seems to be two distinct camps when it comes to milkshake / frozen ice cream drinks. There is the one camp who thinks a milkshakes should be easily slurped through a straw, with just the right amount of effort, but not so much that you struggle. Then there seems to be the camp of people who firmly believe milkshakes are not something you drink… they are to be spooned out of their glass, no straw required.
I’m in the straw camp. My husband is in the spoon camp.
For me what it comes down to is this…I really don’t want to have to work to drink my milkshake. It shouldn’t be an exercise for my cheeks to try and pull the deliciousness through the straw… it should be an effortless experience. In short, I’m lazy.
If you are in the spoon camp (like most of the people who joined in on this conversation), I’m going to assume you love a good Wendy’s Frosty. Am I right? No matter how hard you try, it is impossible to drink a Frosty with a straw… you must use a spoon! Spooners rejoice!
I got this recipe from Becky Austin over at Food.com. Becky made her version in one of the giant ice cream freezers. I just have one of those handy Cuisinart Ice Cream Freezers, so adapted it to fit what I owned.

Wendy
A special summertime treat. Adapted from Food.com
Prep Time 10 minutes minutes
Total Time 1 hour hour
Ingredients
- 6 ounces Cool Whip thawed
- 7 ounces Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1/2 gallon chocolate milk you may need a little less...just pour to the fill line on your ice cream maker
Instructions
Add Cool Whip and Sweetened Condensed Milk to the freezer bowl of your ice cream maker. Stir together until smooth.
Pour in chocolate milk, until up to the fill line on your ice cream maker. Stir together.
Turn on your ice cream maker and freeze for 30-45 minutes, or until Frosty is at desired consistency! Serve frozen, with a spoon.

I’m a straw person too! However, when it comes to Wendy’s Frosty’s, my kids prefer to eat them via french fries (barf!!). This looks great Kristen!

I’m in the straw camp… I don’t want to work to eat my fattening food! But the kids live the spoon so maybe I will break down and make this!
I really wish I had the ingredients for one of these right now. Amazing! I prefer a straw but if I’m being honest with myself, I’d rather enjoy one of these with Wendy’s french fries. 🙂

This a really tough question. It really depends on where the frosty comes from on whether I want a spoon or straw. I know I had to be difficult on this comment.

I love Frosty’s! I am normally split on this, half spoon half straw. Some parts get so melty you need the straw otherwise it is like eating Frosty soup.
This looks amazing but I’m going to have agree. I’m totally in the straw camp, but I’ll make an exception for this treat!

I love this recipe because it makes very rich milk shakes without any ice cream. I don’t always have ice cream in the house because the kids eat it so fast. With this recipe we can have delicious frosty milk shakes for a fraction of the cost of those using ice cream. And all the ingredients are on the pantry shelf.

oh my gosh, I use to be obsessed with these!! we’d pick up frosty’s from wendy’s and fries from mcdonalds, then dip them in the shake. best [college] hangover cure 😉
Oh goodness! This may become dangerous! We love Frostys here but I avoid Wendy’s just to avoid eating one and bringing extra home to keep in the freezer. I must try these this weekend.

Now “across the pond”…if I miss ONE summer …o.k…..YEAR-LONG quintessential American treat…it is THIS. Puh-lease tell me I can use an equivalent ingredient for the COOL WHIP….absolutely not to be found in these parts…Do you or your brilliant tribe of loyal followers have any ideas for me …sniff!!!
(Note…spooning version all the way….relating to the “fries” as spoon vehicle…performed often whilst in High School…oh when one could eat ANYTHING and not have follow-up “results”!!! Sigh!)

Cool Whip is just whipped cream, so I bet if you whipped up some heavy whipping cream with a tablespoon or two of sugar you’d get the same results 🙂

Before I got my ice cream maker I used a really cheap (although more tedious) alternative of taking two tin cans, one large four-quart and one smaller one-quart can, both with lids (you can buy plastic ones) and you put the ice cream mix in the small one, then the small one in the big one and fill the extra space with the ice, then you roll the can around to mix it (a great way to keep kids busy!) until the mix is frozen, and you can check on the inside every so often to make sure the lid is still on. It only makes a quart at a time, but you get exercise in the process! 🙂

take an ice tray and freeze your chocolate milk in cubes, once frozen put in blender add a little bit of sweetened condensed milk and about 6 tablespoons of cool whip and blend perfect frosty every time

I am going to try it tonight. I too hate the taste of Cool Whip with all the chemical crap in it. I am sure it will work just fine because most of the recipes for ice cream made in the maker calls for milk or cream…not Cool Whip.

Pour in just a splash of Dr. Pepper and stir. If the mixture is too thick, add some more cola. Quick and close to the real thing. Cherry co*ke works, too, but the Dr. Pepper works better.

I made this.. I don’t have an ice cream machine and I watched a video that said no worries put mixture into a plastic bag and knead it during the freezing process.. I did this and it turned out wonderful… it was a perfect cool and refreshing treat for a hot summer day…..

I don’t have an ice cream machine but I do have a slushie maker. I wonder if it would work? Similar concept with rock salt and ice. Difference is the churned bit is around the outside of the machine so you can see it. I gotta try this!
