VOICE OVER: Emily Brayton

"Barbie" is officially one of the biggest comedies of all time. For this list, we'll be looking at the best gags, one-liners, and jokes in Greta Gerwig's pink masterpiece. Our countdown includes "Pink" reprise, Ken discovers the patriarchy, "The Matrix" reference, and more!

#10: Pink Reprise

Lizzo’s “Pink” is a very fun way to introduce the Barbies who live in Barbieland. Stereotypical Barbie’s morning routine is pretty funny overall, especially with the number of references to the doll world, including the lack of elements. It’s the perfect set-up for the reprise, which would demolish most of the perfection. Our personal favorite line has to be the new stand-ins for each letter of the word “Pink”. We’ve all had those days when nothing seems to go right but a nasty fall is the just the rotten cherry on top. Yep, K for Death sounds about right.

Kate McKinnon’s weird Barbie is definitely a highlight of the movie and one of her best exchanges with Stereotypical Barbie comes during her explanation for the human-like symptoms that are suddenly plaguing Barbie. She describes the journey to the real world, which all culminates in a very familiar choice to make – except that it’s a little more Barbie-themed. The insistence on choosing the high heel over the birkenstock, and the little back-and-forth between the two dolls makes us laugh through our nose every time we see the clip.

#8: The Only Way to Deal with Street Harassment

The rollerblading bit is a stellar fish-out-of-water scene, and the unfolding of it is masterful. Barbie begins to take notice that the attention she’s getting makes her feel uncomfortable and self-conscious, compared to Ken who’s actually enjoying the stares. Things only get worse when Barbie mistakes a construction site for safe refuge. She’s soon sexually harassed by a random passerby and retaliates beautifully. Unfortunately, this earns both her and Ken what would only be their first arrest of the day. This whole scene is great and it delivers quite possibly one of the best lines in the entire film.

So is this a universal experience by this point? What is thought to be a romantic gesture from someone who plays an instrument ends up really just being a weird, awkward situation. This gag comes after Barbie agrees to be Ken’s “long term, long distance, low commitment, casual girlfriend” and it’s nothing short of hysterical. Between the “4 hours later” cut to the revelation of just how unoriginal the musical deed is, we couldn’t stop giggling. The lyrics of “Push” are also hysterical, considering this is supposed to be a song to woo the Barbies. Oh, the accuracy of it all.

#6: Waking Up From the Patriarchy

Perhaps the best montage in the movie – aside from the journey to and from Barbieland – is the Barbies snapping out of the haze they were under during the Kens’ takeover. With lines like “It's like I've been in a dream where I was really invested in the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League” and “Ooh, are you guys watching the godfa-ther?”, the whole sequence is just phenomenal. There’s also a lot of the comedy in the way the Barbies are snapped out of it. Commentary about how women are expected to operate under the patriarchy is loud and so familiar it almost hurts. Each scenario the Barbies were removed from just kept getting funnier and the whole helpless act they put on is great too.

#5: The Kiss

Anyone who played with dolls growing up has probably made them kiss before. That’s just part of what makes seeing Barbie and Ken act it out so amazing. The scene is, of course, helped along by Ryan Gosling’s fantastic delivery of every single one of his lines. There’s a fun back-and-forth that emphasizes the G-rated nature of Barbie and makes it clear the dolls don’t have a great idea of what often happens after a date. There’s a lot to love in this scene but Ken’s laugh might just be the best of it.

#4: Depression Barbie Ad

When Stereotypical Barbie hits her lowest point in the film, we’re introduced to a new Barbie doll that’s even less kid-friendly than “Irrepressible Thoughts of Death Barbie.” While the children playing with her look quite happy, Barbie’s running mascara and “Pride and Prejudice” marathon suggest the same isn’t true for her. The seven hours scrolling through Instagram and the family-sized bag of Starbursts are a little too real. When we said we wanted more representation, that’s not exactly what we had in mind. The addition of OCD and panic attacks being sold separately is both so funny and so dark.

Ah, yes, the line that started it all. Barbie’s big blowout party is the place to be and, once again, she shows us just how relatable she is by ruining the perfect night with an existential crisis. The music cuts and quite possibly every person in the room stops to stare at her like she’s just committed a felony. Then again, by Barbie standards, this might be about as close as it gets. Record-scratch moments are always funny and this one feels executed flawlessly. We just wish our recoveries from embarrassing moments were as good as Barbie’s.

#2: Ken Discovers the Patriarchy

We can’t express how wonderfully this is done – from the music to the cuts to the montage. It is an absolute cinematic experience watching Ken discover the wonders of the patriarchy. For someone who’s been around hyperfemininity and living in a matriarchy his whole life, we can see why he’s so moved by the displays of typical masculinity he runs into. It’s almost kind of sweet how happy he is to see people who look like him in roles of authority. While it does end up taking a turn for the worse, this short moment of open wonder on his face is both endearing and hilarious. And the whole odd fixation on horses is a great bit, too. "I'll see you on the Malibu beach!" So much of this movie’s humor comes from the Kens and the beach. We’ve got the iconic “I’ll beach you off” exchange. And the fact that Ryan Gosling's Ken has the occupation of “just beach”. Possibly the best moment of all, though, has to be Ken’s solo. The cinematography of “I’m Just Ken” is giving all the drama it needs to give. With the beach brawl interposed in the middle of the song, there’s just so much to be entertained by. The choice of weapons, the allusion to bloodshed, and the Mattel crew arriving right in the middle of it… It’s all brilliant.
